T. Hargrove Saved Patient Life as Health Coach

For more than three years, Tequilla Hargrove, RN, has served as a Medify Health Coach, bringing decades of nursing experience to her work with patients. She has worked across nearly every specialty except pediatrics, including many years alongside cardiologists and endocrinologists. That breadth of experience taught her how quickly conditions can escalate — and how essential it is to remain calm under pressure.

Each day, Nurse Hargrove speaks with patients as part of Chronic Care Management (CCM), asking questions, offering reassurance, and helping them manage chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease. Her first question on every call is always the same: “How are you feeling today?” That simple question has helped her build trust and detect warning signs that otherwise might go unnoticed.

A Day That Changed Everything

One monthly check-in call with an elderly patient still stands out in her mind. The woman answered but could only repeat “hello” and “help me.”

Drawing on her clinical instincts, Nurse Hargrove stayed on the line for 45 minutes while searching the patient’s record for emergency contacts. Finding none, she alerted her manager and immediately contacted local police, sharing critical background information about the patient’s health.

First responders arrived but could not get the patient to the door. With Nurse Hargrove still on the phone, they asked if they could force entry. Knowing time was critical, she approved.

Once inside, responders discovered the patient’s blood sugar was 42 — a life-threatening level. Thanks to Nurse Hargrove’s persistence, the patient received immediate care. She has since stabilized and now lives safely with family.

Staying Calm in Crisis

The experience reinforced a lesson that guides Nurse Hargrove’s daily work:

“You can be perfectly fine today and have a life-threatening event tomorrow. That’s why staying calm and focused is so important.”

Her ability to remain composed under pressure ensured a positive outcome in a frightening situation.
